Creating Your Paper Slipper
The best way to enjoy the origami-like folding of these clever slippers is to not leave any surprises.
In this first step of your project, before you knit, I recommend you print out and fold up a paper schematic of the slipper.
You'll see how the sometimes mysterious-looking instructions actually do work to create a foot-shaped slipper.
You'll also practice the folding process so that when it's time to seam, there will be no butterflies or stress.
Head to Chapter 2 - Plan Your Slippers to watch a video on how to fold up the paper schematic.
Fun step - You'll also plan which colors of yarn you want, where.
Check out the Plan Your Colors chapter to see other examples of how to plan your slipper color schematic.
If you have any questions about what yarn to order or how to fold up the slipper, comment on this lesson and let me know!
Today's Step to Get Involved:
Leave a comment below and let us know you if you made your paper slipper and, if so, what you learned!
I'll send your next email in a week's time after you've had a chance to get yarn. We'll begin knitting the Garter-stitch strip that will become the slipper.
Hello. Yes. I think I’m smarter than you all. I don’t need the video, I will just do this. Took me 2 tries, taping-untaping, and taping again, but finally success! Then I watched the video. Duh. Should have just watched it first! DEFINATELY will help in the seaming of the project. My yarn is scheduled for delivery today. Can’t wait to get started. I plan to knit both at the same time. I also plan to watch the video BEFORE I start!
I’m so glad you got it Beverly! Sometimes troubleshooting on your own before watching the video is good experience for what does or doesn’t work.
Good luck starting on your slippers – hopefully your yarn gets there ASAP :)
All set here! The video was very helpful in the folding process!!
I am using three colors, squares are labelled and ready to knit!
Cindy
Yay! So glad to hear it Cindy :)
Whew! Done with paper folding and learned two things!
One: don’t do origami as a craft! 😁
Two: Don’t do this without Liat and her wonderful videos!! 💗
Do we start knitting yet?
Whooohooo! Signed up for Premium just now too!
Glad you made it! Origami’s not my forte either, but it definitely is a fun way to step out of our comfort zones.
Congrats on joining Premium! We’re so excited to have you join us :)
Having a bit of experience with origami was helpful with the paper slipper process! *8:>)
That’s awesome – I’m sure it made folding the paper much easier! Got to love all kinds of crafts :)
I did it!! I wouldn’t pass an origami class but my paper slipper looks right.
It looks great to me Maureen :) Wonderful start!
Video and paper cut out schematic are essential; thanks so much! Really easy to follow and to see how the folds become a slipper.
Thanks too for the sample color placement with 8 colors. I’m going to use four and want to do what you visually demonstrated with your colors – making mirror image slippers. I had an idea how to make that work but, seeing your color schematic which exchanges the cuff and side diamond colors, confirms my plan and reinforces for me that I finally get how this works!
We are so glad the paper schematic was a success :) It really is a great way to pre-plan the color choices before having to cast on. Good luck picking out your colors, and we’re so excited to see how your mirror-image slippers turn out!
I’m all set! Thanks for the video-it saved me!
Yay! We are so happy to hear that Jackie :) Glad you’re joining us for the KAL!
The video was a life saver, even with it, it took me two tries, but success!
That’s awesome Marianne! Second time’s a charm ;)
All set. Great spacial relationship lesson. All set, just waiting for my needles. 🧶
So glad to hear that Mary! Hope your needles come sooner than later :)
My stiff fingers had trouble with the paper print out. Probably should have made a larger pattern. I sure hope the fabric piece is easier to fold. I want to do my first pair all one color.
Sorry to hear you were having trouble with the paper version Eunice! Maybe try pre-folding the seams so they’re easier to tape? But hopefully the fabric version will give you less trouble since it’s more pliable than paper. We’ll have all the guidance you need for seeming, if even if your set is monochromatic :)
Excited to see how they turn out!
The paper diagram and your video Liat were very helpful!
That’s great to hear!
This is cool. The video definitely helped. I did it.
Yay! We’re so glad it was helpful Pam :)
