Check Your Gauge

You’ll be checking your gauge (the size of your stitches) on a small swatch knitted in the round.

The reason for this is that your knit and purl stitches may not be exactly the same size. When you knit Stockinette stitch in the round, you use only knit stitches. So it’s important to measure the size of your stitches in the way you’ll actually be knitting them.

If you have more stitches per inch in your swatch than what is called for in this pattern, use a one size bigger needle and check your gauge again.

If you have fewer stitches per inch that what is called for in the pattern, use a one size smaller needle and check your gauge again.

For this pattern, the required gauge (measured on the larger of the two needles is):
Bulky version: 3 3/4 sts/in or 7 1/2 stitches in two inches
Worsted version: 5 1/4 sts/in or 10 1/2 stitches in two inches.
