Foliage Hat
Getting Started
Welcome to your Foliage hat class! We will be knitting this classic charted lace hat for adults on Magic Loop. You will learn not only the basics of knitting lace in the round on Magic Loop, but also many intermediate and advanced techniques you'll use on myriad projects for years to come.
Pattern
We will be knitting the Foliage Hat by Emily Mooney.
Please go to the free pattern above and print it out so you can have refer to it while you watch the videos.
Materials
Yarn
To knit this hat, you will need either 100 yards of bulky-weight yarn (I love Malabrigo Chunky) or 215 yards of worsted-weight yarn (I love Malabrigo Worsted).
Needles
To knit this hat on Magic Loop as shown in the class videos, you’ll need a 40-47″ circular needle in two sizes.
For the chunky (yellow) hat, suggested sizes are US Size 9 (5.5mm) and US Size 10 1/2 (6.5 mm). For the bulky (red) hat, suggested sizes are US Size 5 (3.75mm) and US Size 7 (4.5 mm).
The sizes you will actually use will depend on how tightly or loosely you personally knit, as determined by your gauge swatch. (You’ll learn how to check your gauge in the round on Magic Loop shortly.)
If you’re ordering needles and trying to choose between 40 or 47 inches, I’d choose the 47-inch length because that makes it easier to knit two-at-a-time, which you may want to do on some future project. There are no drawbacks to using 47-inch needles for all your Magic Loop projects.
If you have your materials at hand, the next step is to check your gauge in the round on Magic Loop. If you’ve never done Magic Loop before, don’t worry! The two videos in the next chapter will walk you through every step and get you ready to start the actual hat.
Project Overview
In this video, I’ll walk you through the two pattern options you have, the materials needed, and the different sections of the pattern so you can know what to expect before you begin.

Navigating this Class
Besides walking you through every step of this project, I’ve made two extensive sections of extra videos to help you get the most learning possible out of this class.
In the table of contents at left, you’ll find the Tips and Troubleshooting sections. They were mostly filmed between rounds 7-15 of the crown of the hat. You can watch them separately to knitting the hat, or watch them in the order I filmed them while knitting the hat.
If you’d like to watch them in order, you’d do:
