First Plain Rows (Rows 1-4)
Following the pattern, cast on 42 stitches using the Long-Tail Cast-On.
Next, work rows 1-4, which, according to the chart, are all in Stockinette stitch.

Remember to highlight each right-side (RS) row as you finish working it. You can also put a marker in the RS of your work to help you identify it (in the beginning both sides look similar).
Earlier, I mentioned that the wrong side (WS) of the work is not shown in the chart. Instead, we are instructed to “work even” on the WS, which means to knit all the knit stitches we see, and purl all the purl stitches.
