Basic Hat
Making your first hat can be hard to get your head around. We teach you to knit your first hat on Magic Loop so you can avoid the difficulty of double-pointed needles, forever!
Getting Started
Welcome to your basic hat class! We will be knitting an easy basic chunky hat for adults on Magic Loop. You will learn not only the basics of knitting in the round on Magic Loop, but also many beginner and intermediate techniques you'll use on myriad projects for years to come.
Pattern
We will be knitting the Basic Chunky Hat for Magic Loop – Adult Size.
Please download the pattern above and print it out so you can refer to it while you watch the videos.
To knit a worsted-weight version of this hat, just download our Basic Worsted-Weight Hat Pattern. The techniques used are exactly the same, just the number of stitches you’ll knit will be different.
Materials
Yarn
To knit this hat, you will need 100 yards of bulky-weight yarn. I love Malabrigo Chunky (please note: not machine washable), but you can use any yarn that will get you a gauge of 3.5 sts/in in Stockinette stitch (more on checking your gauge here).
The hat above used exactly 92 yards of Malabrigo Chunky.
Needles
To knit this hat on Magic Loop as shown in the class videos, you’ll need a 40-47″ circular needle in two sizes. Suggested sizes are US Size 9 (5.5mm) and US Size 10 (6mm). The sizes you will actually use will depend on how tightly or loosely you personally knit, as determined by your gauge swatch. (You’ll learn how to check your gauge in the round on Magic Loop next.)
If you’re ordering needles and trying to choose between 40 or 47 inches, I’d choose the 47-inch length because that makes it easier to knit two-at-a-time, which you may want to do on some future project. There are no drawbacks to using 47-inch needles for all your Magic Loop projects.
If you have your materials at hand, the next step is to check your gauge in the round on Magic Loop. If you’ve never done Magic Loop before, don’t worry! The first video in the next chapter will walk you through every step, plus checking your gauge, and get you ready to start the actual hat.
