  1. First pair was toddler size for which I added felted buttons and little deerskin grippers. The second pair of the adult small size slippers is not quite finished. This was my first time using the mattress stitch and I see a few irregularities :~. Started adult large, on circular needle this time, so am knitting two at a time.

  2. I bought 100% wool yarn to make the slippers but just realized tonight that what I bought is Worsted, not DK.
Can I still make the slippers from this yarn, adjusting the stitches somehow?
I was going to make the largest size.
Hope you can help me – I can’t return the yarn.
    Thank you.

  3. Wendy Billingsley

This is my first KAL. What makes it a KAL? Do we just do the steps together ( but apart) and then post questions somewhere along the way? Perhaps this will be more obvious as we move along but I have been wondering. Wendy

    1. Elias - KnitFreedom Customer Happiness

      Hi Wendy,

Great question! The Knitalong will have the schedule that you can find here. There are 7 emails that will walk you through each step of your online class. If you have a question you can drop us an email or leave a comment in the lesson.
But you can also have all the information in the Felted Slippers class. I hope that helps!

      Happy knitting,
      Elias

  4. After watching from the start to the end, then reading the pattern I have chosen to go with 1 color for my slippers. In doing so there is no instructions for this choice. I would be placing a life line at each of my squares (or in the color change area) is there any other advice or suggestions?

    Suza Cox.

    1. Mary Claire Phillips - KnitFreedom Knitting Expert

      Hi Suza!

I love the idea of some monochromatic slippers. Great choice! During the KAL, we will prep the seams by placing different colored scrap yarn for each block. This will help you differentiate the different blocks even if you use one color.

Excited to see how they turn out! :)

    2. PS – I have added instructions for how to do the slipper with only one color to your Felted Slippers class. You can place a lifeline, or you can also just insert a stitch marker to mark every time you “would” be changing colors if you were doing multiple colors.

  5. Really excited to join this class. I started knitting for the first time two years ago based on your amazing videos and have passed your name onto several others who wanted to learn. Have never felted before but am excited to try these slippers. As a few others mentioned, I will be trying two at a time.

My other goal for this class is to stay connected. I am pretty busy at work during the day and am looking forward to some “me” time with friends.

Liat, I just have to add that I love listening to your voice both literally and figuratively. The message you send–that it’s alright, that you can fix your mistakes, that things don’t have to be perfect–all resonate. I was thrilled to see that you have returned!
    /Susan

    1. Mary Claire Phillips - KnitFreedom Knitting Expert

Susan, we are so glad you’re joining us for this KAL and that KnitFreedom could help you learn to knit! I could not agree more – knit-a-longs are such a great way to find community when so many of us are stuck at home. Excited to see how your slippers progress!

      Cheers,
      Mary Claire

    2. Hi Susan,
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, you have no idea how much it’s brightened my day!
I feel so glad that this class is right up your ally, and I love that you’re going to be doing two-at-a-time.
And it feels so good to know that you are connecting with our awesome message – the more I realize that it’s really the core of KnitFreedom, the more confident I feel about everything we do. So it’s helping me, too! And it’s super-helpful to know that it’s what you’re resonating with. Amazing feedback – thank you!

  6. Hi! This will be my first ever pair of slippers! I am making them for my grandson (6 months old). Liat taught me how to knit!
    Jackie

      1. Hi Sue,
Thanks for your question! You can use worsted yarn without a problem. If you have size 11 needles you can use size 11s. You may end up felting the slippers a bit longer so that they shrink down to size. There’s so much variation that happens when felting that you really have a lot of leeway as to what yarn and needles you use.

        I hope this helps!
        Cheers,
        Liat

    1. Mary Claire Phillips - KnitFreedom Knitting Expert

Aww, that’s wonderful Jackie :) I’m sure your grandson will appreciate his toasty toes as he runs around this winter. I’m so glad Liat introduced you to knitting and its joys!

  7. Thank you for this class can’t wait to start…. That’s the hard part to “wait to start”
This is going to be fun.
You ladies are the best. lLove the support, excitement.
    Suzan

    1. Hi Jane,
Great idea! Another knitalong member was just wondering the same thing! Yes, you can do them two-at-a-time. You’ll still be knitting flat, keep in mind. You’ll just knit across one slipper row with one yarn, and then across the same row on the other slipper with the other yarn.

If you have any questions when doing these two-at-a-time, let me know!

      Liat

  8. I’m looking forward to a fun, learning project to keep my feet warm! I live in Ontario, Canada and our winters are cold LOL I’m heading out today to buy yarn and am planning to make a little pair for youngest granddaughter. The Puffy Paint will be hearts and an owl for sure 😊

Thanks so much for making this available Liat!

    Jane

    1. Aw, so sweet! Thanks for participating and for your enthusiasm. I’m sure you’re going to like this project and I know your little granddaughter will adore her custom-made hearts-and-owls slippers. :D

      Liat

      1. Hi again!I went to the yarn shop which is 40 minutes away and ended up buying a variegated wool which was on sale in a bundle of 5 ‘balls’. I decided to get it so that I could make a pair for myself and a pair for each of my older grandchildren. Now I’m wondering if I made a big mistake 😞 Will it be too confusing to do this or can I mark it carefully and make it work?
        Thanks for you help!
        Jane

        1. Hi Jane, great question!

Let me just confirm – you bought one ball of variegated yarn that you’re going to use for the whole slipper?

If so, no, you did not make a big mistake. I’ll help you mark the seams carefully so it will work just fine. One thing that might help is marking the end of each block as you knit with a stitch marker, even though you will not be changing colors. So if you are doing the child size, you’re to knit 28 rows before “changing colors” even though you’ll just continue knitting with the same yarn. You’ll count your rows along with the video, and just put a stitch marker in every 28 rows.

When you’re preparing your seams, this will make it easier to see where the block edges are.

Let me know if that was your concern. :)

          Liat

  9. Very excited, hopefully I will pick up some skills to become a better knitter. Love house slippers, my feel are always cold. Thank you Liat!

    1. Hi Pamela,

Thanks so much for joining! You will absolutely learn some great skills on this project – seaming fearlessly with Mattress stitch is needed for seaming sweater sleeves, and picking up and knitting is important for top-down socks and knitted items with complex shapes.

And this project is just plain fun, and who couldn’t use a little extra fuzzy fun these days!

      Welcome aboard!

      Liat

  10. I’m probably a glutton for punishment, but…can I do these two at a time?

I use circular needles for all of my knitting, I just knit flat ( don’t joint them into rounds). But I was wondering if for this pattern, two at a time were feasible for a more experienced knitter.

I’ve made socks before, last 2 pairs I made were toe-up, two at a time and I used magic loop on those pairs. They turned out great.

I LOVE the fact that when you do two at a time, you’re DONE when you’re done. No more doing one of something then trying to remember what you did (and if you had to correct any problems), so that both pieces are actually the same size as well as having the project finished and ready to use. So much nicer than getting one of something down to the finish line and then… having to start over to do a second one of what you just finished.

    1. Darlene, I LOVE this idea!!!! Yes, do them two-at-a-time!! This is a great idea and you won’t have any problem at all. And even if it’s a TEENSY bit more work to manage two balls of yarn at once, it’ll be worth it because, like you said, when you’re done, you’re done!

You can probably even seam two-at-a-time as well: Do the A seam on each slipper, then the B seam on each slipper. You really will be done when you’re done.

I love the way you express the benefits of two-at-a-time. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

      Cheers,
      Liat

  11. I know nothing about puff paint. Where and what kind to buy and what color? Should it blend in; will it wash out?

    1. Hi Janice,

Puff paint isn’t a requirement, it’s just an optional finish that may help the slippers be less slippery on the bottom. It definitely won’t wash out – it’s puffy fabric paint that sticks to the fabric and stays on the surface.

Here is a link to one on Amazon but you can just search for “fabric paint” or “puff paint” to find sources.

      https://www.knitfreedom.com/resource/fabric-puffy-paint/

You can watch this video to see what using puff paint looks like. The one I used in the video actually is sparkly gold when dry, which my son liked the look of.
