Updated Cast-On Instructions, and Take Your Time!
In our original Judy's Magic Cast-On (JMCO) video, we teach you to you knit through the back loop on the second needle so as to untwist the stitches that get twisted during the cast-on.
Later we learned that you can do JMCO without twisting the stitches, so then you don't have to knit through the back loop to un-twist them.
Here's the video for the updated technique: New Video: Judy's Magic Cast-On for Two-at-a-Time Socks
And don't worry if you don't remember Judy's Magic Cast-On, just follow the video to cast on for your socks, and for your next pair of socks, refer to the video again.
If You're Tired, Overwhelmed, or Sad, Take Heart
I've received several emails from lovely knitalong members saying that with the state of the world and/or their jobs right now, the knitalong just feels like too much.
Some of you are doing fine but haven't got around to actually grabbing your yarn and needles and trying the cast-on yet. Either way, I wanted to let you know that I understand and I care. There is no rush to do these socks or follow this knitalong. You'll have the emails in your email history in case you want to look back, and you'll always have access to the knitalong as well.
I'll also be doing other knitalongs in the future, but with limited groups of students so that I can give everyone one-on-one time if needed.
If knitting helps you feel good, just knit something basic and easy, like our Basic Slouchy Hat for Magic Loop, or anything that makes you feel GOOD.
Happy knitting!
Hello Liat,
Thank you for doing this knitalong. I just want to say I am enjoying relearning how to do the magic loop and the pace of the program. The videos are great. I don’t have the time I usually have to knit, now that the family is home, but I can knit enough to keep up with the knit along. I am working up to the gusset, and hope to be there for the next lesson!
Hi there,
Thank you for this comment! I love that this knitalong is working out for you and the pacing is what you expected. I’m glad you don’t feel like it’s too slow!! Happy knitting and thanks so much for being a part of this knitalong.
Hugs,
Liat
Hi Liat
This has been very good for my mood. And I found using a variegated yarn really helped not to mix up the yarn. I’m at the gusset and going for knee socks <3 You are a wonderful teacher and I love you explaining in the videos. …….And your baby is adorable stay safe.
Thanks,
Carol
Hi Carol,
Woohoo! Thank you so much! I’m so happy you are enjoying knitting the socks, and I love the tip about variegated yarn. I am learning a lot doing this knitalong as well, thanks to the comments from knitters like you.
Hugs!!
Liat
After several tough starts, I felt like I had the hang of the toe section. Just to realize that one of the toes is going to have to be redone. Can I do-over just one sock or do I have to start all over.
Thanks.
Hi Judi,
Well done you for persevering through the toe. It is definitely the hardest part. You can do-over just one sock – I’ll film a video for you showing how to take one sock off to redo it and then put it back on.
Stand by, video coming soon.
Hi Judi,
Here is how to take off one or both socks so you can re-do your work without starting both socks over:
