Bodhi in handknit socks

Here is a free basic beginner generic sock pattern for toe-up socks, one– or two-at-a-time, using Magic Loop and the Fleegle Heel. Following Fleegle's famous sock formula, written out in my own words. Design your own socks in any size, for any weight or gauge of yarn.

You can make a pair of toe-up socks in any size (baby to very large adult) in any weight of yarn (fingering to super-bulky) using this simple, generic pattern.

You just have to have the feet nearby to refer to, or at least be able to estimate the length of the foot from toe to front-of-ankle.

You can make these socks as a gift by comparing the recipient's shoe size against your own shoe size, and making the necessary measurements from there.

Links to abbreviation videos and special techniques included, as always. Enjoy!

  1. Just a warm thank you for sharing your patterns. I’ve made the super bulky toe up socks for myself and enjoyed them very much. Now I’m knitting a pair for my grandson (size 13!!) and am grateful to find this pattern that helps me adjust upward in size. Happy New Year!!

  2. I’m using 9mm with bulky yarn to make socks using your pattern. I have 18 total stitches for the foot. So 9 stitches on each needle for instep and heel. I need to increase the heel stitches to 16; however, with 2 increases in each increase round that gives me a total of 15 stitches. I’ve started the heel turn, but I find that the written instructions do not work for bulky yarn. (I know that you have a pattern using bulky, and the small size is too big, and I wanted to try this pattern for all sizes and all yarn weights.)
Do you suggest a deeper gusset? I’m needing the socks to feet a narrow foot with a normal-high arch. Or maybe an increase somewhere to get an even amount of stitches for heel to start the turn?

  3. My total sock stitches is 64 so my gusset must have 62. So when done with that do I only turn the heel withno flap? Can my gusset be 56 stitches? Can I do a gusset of 2 inches? Does stitch count make a big difference. First time with fleegle heel. Thank you.

    1. Hi Marlene,

I suggest you follow the instructions exactly for your sock to come out correctly. You can for example follow the directions in our Basic Fingering-Weight Toe-Up Sock pattern which will tell you exactly how many stitches to use (follow the large size for 64 stitches).

I would not make any changes to the gusset. Stitch count makes a big difference!

You can also check out our Toe-Up Socks class which has videos walking you through every step of this toe-up sock. You are guaranteed to feel comfortable knitting toe-up socks after taking the class.

  4. Help! I would like to make the chunky socks as men’s slippers-size 12 with super bulky wool, do you have a pattern for this or can you give me stitch numbers for this pattern for that size?

    1. Hi Laurae,
Thanks so much for your comment! I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you. You can definitely use this generic pattern to make men’s large socks with super-bulky yarn. I have a pattern for Toe-Up Socks with Super-Bulky Yarn, but you may need to modify it to fit a men’s size 12.
      Let’s say a men’s size 12 has a 10.5-inch foot circumference. The gauge for super-bulky yarn is 2.5 sts/in in St st. To reach a 10.5-inch foot circumference, we need to have 2.5 x 10.5 = 26.26 sts = 26 sts for the foot.

To knit the sock, here are my suggestions:
      Toe: CO 10 sts.
Increase to 26 total for foot.
Gusset: increase until heel needle contains 24 sts.
      Follow directions for turning heel.

      I hope this helps!
