Knit And Purl Yarnovers In Any Combination

Liat Gat - Founder

"Yarnover" means to put a loop of yarn around the right-hand needle. Here's how to do yarnovers before and after both knit and purl stitches. This is a good refresher for those just learning to knit.

Just a quick post today, by special request: how to do all kinds of yarnovers.

  1. Yay!! So happy to catch this video on yarnovers!! Can be very tricky. ALL of your videos are so very helpful and So.Well.Done! Thank you!

    1. Hi Marilyn,
Hooray! I’m so glad you found my video and it helped you make sense of the tricky yarnovers! Love that you’re a part of KnitFreedom. Happy knitting and keep in touch!

  2. Hi Liat,

I love all of your videos but especially the yarn overs. Since I am a new knitter I need all the help I can get. And since I’m over sixty it probably takes me longer to learn than say the young ones. Thank you so much for all your hard work.

  3. I just learn knitting, and you have the clearest instructions I can find anywhere. It really cleared Yarn overs up for me! Thanks so much! Excellent teaching vid!

    1. Thanks, Lisa! I’m glad that the videos are easy for you to follow. :) It’s nice to get yarn-overs straightened out, isn’t it?! Happy knitting!

  4. This video was really helpful for me — I’m still learning all the knitting techniques and such. Also inspired me to pick up the knitting needles again. I stopped knitting when summer hit since there’s not really a need for warm knitted garments right now, LOL. But then I remember that blanket that I started and the fact that it’ll be winter by the time I’m finished… :P

    1. Thank you! I am happy to teach you all you need to know :) Actually summer is a good time to learn as there is no pressure to finish it fast!

  5. I already knew how to do this, but I was thinking how thrilled I’d have been to see this back when I was learning. Those just learning to knit are so fortunate to have access to your videos; and I’m so fortunate, too, to have access to the ones teaching techniques I am just learning! :-)

  6. This video made me slap myself in the head! lol About two weeks ago, I had a total brain freeze while purling and doing a yarn over (early onset memory loss?). First time I did it, I had two yarn overs, the second time I did it, I didn’t have any, thankfully on the third try, I remembered how to do it! Love your videos Liat! :D
