The 7 key elements of knitting to master in order to knit whatever you want

Without mastery of the 7 key elements of knitting, you won't be able to take on new projects with confidence. The 7 key areas are knit and purl (and slip stitch), increases and decreases, cast-ons and bind-offs, knitting in the round, knitting with color, fixing mistakes, and lace knitting.

Without mastery of the 7 key elements of knitting, you won’t be able to take on new projects with confidence.

The 7 key areas are:

  1. knit and purl (and slip stitch)
  2. increases and decreases
  3. cast-ons and bind-offs
  4. knitting in the round
  5. knitting with color
  6. fixing mistakes
  7. lace knitting

Here’s how these 7 skills affect your knitting:

1. Knit and purl and slip stitch:

Complex projects will be outside your grasp without a mastery of every combination of knit and purl, plus reading your work and fixing mistakes on knit-and-purl textured patterns.

Ribbing, seed stitch, moss stitch, mistake rib, slip-stitch designs, and even mosaic knitting all stem from these basic combinations which quickly become not-so-basic. Our Fearless Knitter course will challenge you in every aspect of knit and purl combinations so that you are ready to advance and never look back.

2. Increases and decreases:

Making shapes in your knitting is impossible without mastery of increases and decreases. Sweater sleeves and necklines, sock toes and heels, and the crowns of hats all depend on mathematical combinations of increases and decreases to fit correctly and look great.

Our Fearless Knitter and Knitting Superstar courses expose you to countless combinations of increases and decreases so you are ready to take on even advanced shaped projects like short-row bust shaping on sweaters and tiny knitted toys.

3. Cast-ons and bind-offs:

You can make or break a project with your finishing techniques – literally. A too-tight cast-on can ruin a pair of socks, and a non-stretchy bind-off on lace can cause your shawl to bunch up and hide its beautiful pattern.

We teach you over 80 different bind-offs and cast-ons in our finishing techniques courses, plus recommend the perfect one for each type of project and fabric so you can save time and ensure your finished project come out beautifully.

4. Knitting in the round:

Without being able to knit in the round easily and with pleasure, you’ll be stuck in flat-land – scarves and dishcloths – for your entire knitting career. Traditional methods of round knitting involve double-pointed needles, which sound scary and are slow and frustrating to knit with.

In our Magic Loop and Toe-Up and Top-Down Sock courses, we teach you to master the easiest and most flexible way to knit in the round: on one long flexible needle. You’ll be able to knit a pair of mittens, socks, or sweater sleeves at the same time using this technique, meaning you’ll finish faster and never have to start over again to finish the second sock.

5. Knitting with color:

Without venturing into and mastering the world of color-knitting, you deprive yourself of the ability to knit the word’s most striking designs. Patterned two-and-three-color sweaters (called Fair-Isle) are a classic project, and Brioche’s stunning stripes are quickly becoming the knitting world’s most popular challenge.

In addition, knitting with two and three colors teaches you tension skills that will improve every area of your knitting. Our four color-knitting courses take you from doubting your ability to even hold onto two yarns at once to being a practiced color-knitter ready to take on eye-popping single- and double-sided designs.

6. Fixing mistakes:

Every challenge you encounter in your knitting could lead to an abandoned project and tons of frustration if you don’t learn how to fix your mistakes. At every level of knitting, from the very beginner to the super-advanced, mistakes happen and you’ll need to learn to recognize them, figure out what went wrong, and easily get back on track without breaking a sweat so you can enjoy knitting and feel confident tackling new projects.

Our dedicated Fixing Knitting Mistakes course teaches you the basics of how to recognize and fix mistakes. Every other course we offer goes in-depth into fixing intermediate and advanced mistakes particular to the kind of project you’re working on. Once you finish KSU, no fear of knitting mistakes will hold you back from tackling the project of your dreams.

7. Lace knitting:

Lace knitting is intimidating because it’s so hard to recognize and fix mistakes on lace. The combination of holes and decreases makes a dropped stitch look like a complete mystery, and often totally disappear. Learning to knit lace with confidence lets you create the world’s most stunning shawls, wraps, and “ooh”-worthy sweaters.

Our Beginning Lace class teaches you to master basic lace patterns and repeats and recognize and fix mistakes on a time-proven lace pattern so you can feel ultra-confident approaching harder lace projects.

So what’s the easy way to learn all this?
