What Does It Mean to Become a Knitting Superstar?

Supergirl image leaping for the starsWe coined this term in 2010 to refer to anyone who knits with enthusiasm, confidence, and enjoyment.

Being a Knitting Superstar means knowing you can knit whatever you want, whenever you want, even if you don’t know how to do it yet.

Finding you online has been the best thing to happen to my knitting, and my enjoyment of it, since I picked up a pair of needles.

  1. Hi, my name is Hope. I am excited about your site and want to get started.
problems I currently have with knitting:
1 I can’t seam to figure out how to use dpns. I find a lot of patterns I like that are written for dpns and I am interested in learning how to use the ones I have. But I can’t figure out how to juggle the needles and it’s very confusing to me.
2 I want to learn the two at a time technique. for socks and mittens.
3 fair isle knitting. I have the basics of double knitting under my belt, and havn’t tried to takle learning fair isle yet.
4 the herringbone stitch. I have tried and tried to learn this stitch but I making a mistake somewhere because my number of stitches just increases dramatically.

I think that’s all of my current problems. but i would love to figure out how to design patterns for myself. particularly knitted toys, mittens and socks.

      Hi Hope,

Thank you so much for writing! I am so sorry for the late reply. There was a bit of a mix-up. But we are so happy you are part of KnitFreedom. Your questions are great, and I would like to address each of them individually:
Dpns: these can be tricky and often hard to work with. Have you tried Magic Loop knitting? This knitting method in the round is awesome and much less fidgety than dpns. This leads me to your next question. Knitting two at a time: KnitFreedom offers classes in Magic Loop and Toe-Up Socks. The Toe-up sock class is a two at a time class. Next, Fair Isle knitting: KnitFreedom has a great Fair-Isle Knitting course too! Finally, the Herringbone stitch: This is such a pretty stitch. Do you have a pattern using this stitch? If so, would you send it to me? I might be able to see where you are having trouble and be able to help you better.
KnitFreedom also has a lexicon of videos and courses on Magic Loop, Toe-up Socks, and Fair-Isle knitting that is now a part of Knitting Superstar University (KSU). My sense is the Toe-up sock class would be beneficial.
Lastly, you mentioned you wanted to design toys, mittens, and socks. All of these can be done on Magic Loop. I design toys using Magic Loop, and it is so much easier than Dpns. A great toy designer is Susan Claudino. You can check her out on Ravelry at Susan Claudino Designs
I think this is a great start!
      Happy Knitting,
      Skye

  2. Hello and happy new year! I’m Julie and a self-taught knitter for about 12 yrs now. My projects are simple but fun — dish/face cloths, scarves, hats, cowls, baby blankets, leg warmers, but I’d like to expand. I took a class about 10 yrs ago on circular knitting but was pretty overwhelmed once I realized most of the participants were experienced knitters. Magic loop was one of the techniques being offered and I was intrigued but couldn’t grasp much of it. I came home, went on the internet and found your basic magic loop video. (It’s still on my “favorites” tab!) It was clear, helpful and most of all, it lifted me! You’re a natural teacher; I love how you explain things, your camera shots are perfect, and your manner is soothing so I don’t come undone when I make a mistake (and I make plenty!).

A great tidbit I learned today is why my stitches are so hard to move on my needles in magic loop, and apparently it’s a mistake made by me and many others and that’s holding the yarn so tightly when making the first stitch to avoid a gap. Thank you for that helpful video and for this community!

  3. HI and thank you for letting me join.
I have lost my instructor five years ago and she helped me out a lot when it came to knitting and crocheting. I actually do both.
I have been knitting since i was nine years old which rounds out to knittinf and crocheting for fifty years.
i find both needle and hook very relaxing and when riding in a car, or wagon, i tend to take either with me to create blankets, sweater sets or just to keep my hands busy.
I found your site on the internet and said why not sign up. i just need to be able to keey in what i am looking for and take it from there.
I have a favorite when it comes to mittens and i feel that crochetedd ones are too bulky and just love the knitted kind. So far i only knit with tow needles or with a circular needle, haven’t quite figured out how to work with the double pointed needles.
Once again thank you letting me jooin.
    Lesley

    1. Hi Lesley,

We are so happy you joined us at KnitFreedom. I’m Mary Claire – one of the Knitting Experts here to help with everyone’s great questions :)

That’s wonderful you have been both crocheting and knitting for 50 years and are still looking for new skills and challenges. We have a class to learn how to do two-at-a-time mittens, which may be a great way to work on some knitted mittens (https://www.knitfreedom.com/shop/mittens/).

Thanks for saying hello and introducing yourself Lesley, we’re glad you’re here!

  4. Oh my goodness Liat and Mary Claire. You will not believe what my wonderful hubby said to me today when I was yet again yammering away about my new yarn, the class, etc. He said he had really been giving my Santa request a lot of thought and told me he wasn’t going to use it as a Christmas gift but to get signed up for Premium. I about fainted! LOL What??? Why??? He said ever since I signed up for the newsletter and learned how to fix stitches and watched a few videos, I’ve been so excited and he’s loved that I’m finally excited about my knitting again and happy in general after this past year and a half. He said I talk non stop about you and how it’s helped me and that I deserve the whole package as a pat on the back for a job well done this past year, for working so hard on recovering and relearning my knitting and comprehension. He chuckled and said it’s also nice to see I’m not ready to throw it across the room or swearing at it. LOL So I think patience is coming back a bit too. He said to tell you thanks for the inspiration you have given me. (I do too.) I’ll be back to get registered for that this week. Hugs, Sharon

Ahh – what a delightful surprise! Sounds like you’ve got a sweet and supportive partner, and great cheerleader to your knitting journey. It warms my heart to know KnitFreedom has helped you get more joy (and less frustration!) while knitting.

Hope you’re doing well and staying safe! Excited to see how your slippers progress on this KAL :)

  5. Hi, my name is Sharon, from Idaho, retired.
First of all, Just wondering if there is a way I can make the top half of your main page smaller so more of whatever I’m looking at (such as a blog for instance) can be seen better and not have to scroll so much? Or am I going to the wrong spot?

Also, I’m really looking forward to the slipper cal! When I discovered Liat and viewed some videos, I felt I finally found someone to relearn knittting from. Her voice is so calming to my brain. You see, March of 2018, I had a brain injury. Then a few months later I started having seizures. I forgot SO much, including how to knit! I had been knitting for years! My knitting group banded around me and when I started to feel I even could handle learning, they helped me with a few basics. Then Covid hit and we haven’t been able to meet. So the youtube journey began with suggestions again from my group of people of who they liked. I was really struggling to find someone who didn’t irritate me or went too fast, felt frustrated, etc. Or come away feeling like I’m not going to learn this. I still have so much trouble with input but Liat has made me feel I CAN do this again just in her first few videos in my newsletters! So thats why I’m taking a deep breath and jumping in to the Slipper kal.
BTW, I’m the one who told you I’ve asked Santa for a premium membership.
If I posted this in the wrong place, for getting to know each other, please feel free to move it.
    Sharon

    1. Hi Sharon,

It’s so great to meet you! Thank you for coming by and introducing yourself!
I love that you let me know “I’m the one who asked Santa for a Premium membership!” I remember you :D

I think I can help you with the issue with the top half of your screen being taken up by menu items and such. I need to see a screenshot so I can tell what is happening. Are you using an iPad? Or what device are you using to look at the page? The best way to work on this together will be to email me at [email protected] and I can ask you more questions and try to fix the problem.

I also wanted to say thank you for sharing your story of your brain injury and having to re-learn how to knit. It’s so incredible to me that you were able to face the challenges and learn through video!! I feel like you’re really in the right place if you want to learn from someone who’s going to actually help you, where you don’t have to try to ignore annoyances and distractions or an irritating voice in the videos. I’m here!!! And I so want to help you get back to enjoying knitting again.

The slipper KAL is the PERFECT place to start – it is such an easy and rewarding project, and you WILL (re)learn a few great skills you can take to future, more complex projects.

Thank you for coming and introducing yourself, it’s great to meet you! We’re here if you need anything, either with a blog comment or an email to [email protected]. :)

      Hugs!!
