JSSBO-Turbo: Jeny Staiman’s Faster, Easier Bind-Off for Ribbing

JSSBO-Turbo: Jeny Staiman’s Faster, Easier Bind-Off for Ribbing

When Jeny Staiman, inventor of Jeny's Surprisingly-Stretchy Bind-Off (JSSBO), found that it was too clunky and unenjoyable for her taste, she created an updated TURBO version. Here is the exclusive, authorized video.

Introducing the JSSBO-Turbo: Jeny Staiman’s New Favorite Stretchy Bind-Off

Hello darling readers, I’m back with a new update and collaboration with Jeny Staiman, of JSSBO (Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off) fame!

Why JSSBO Became a Go-To Bind-Off

JSSBO rose to popularity as one of the best stretchy bind-offs out there, capable of binding off any combination of rib stitches and stretching out and springing back in with impressive elasticity. Unlike the Invisible Ribbed Bind-Off which uses a tapestry needle and yarn to sew, JSSBO is a knitted bind-off that you can do while your work is still on the needles.

Jeny’s Honest Take: It’s Not Always Fun to Do

Still, in one of our recent conversations, Jeny shared with me that although she liked the stretchiness and the “corrugated” look of her eponymous bind-off, she found that she didn’t use it all that much.

Knitting is all about what you enjoy. –Jeny Staiman

In a pinch, Jeny found herself using a variation of the K2tog bind-off where you K2tog through the back loops. It’s not stretchy at all, but, as she explains, “Sometimes, you just don’t care, you just want to do it fast, because you want the thing.”

How the JSSBO-Turbo Was Born

In classic Jeny fashion, she found herself wondering if there were a way to make the K2togtbl bind-off more elastic, and thereby get the best of both worlds. Without thinking about JSSBO, she tried adding a reverse yarnover between each stitch. Then things clicked into place when she did a regular yarnover before a purl stitch and a reverse yarnover before the knit stitch.

Meet the JSSBO-Turbo

Voilà! A new, turbo-charged version of JSSBO was born. Not only does it look tidier across the top, with the same corrugated texture, Jeny shares that she finds it much more pleasing to do. The JSSBO-Turbo is now Jeny’s new go-to stretchy bind-off for any kind of rib.

Video Tutorial: Learn the JSSBO-Turbo

Excited to give it a try? Grab some sharp-taper needles, knit up a sample of 1×1 rib, and follow along with the video below to learn Jeny Staiman’s NEW favorite stretchy bind-off. Written instructions follow the video.

JSSBO-Turbo: Written Instructions

  1. Slip the first stitch purlwise.
  • If the next stitch is a purl stitch:
  1. Bring the yarn to the front.
  2. YO, bringing the yarn back to the front.
  3. Insert the right-hand needle purlwise into the first stitch on the left-hand needle, with the right-hand needle in front.
  4. Insert the left-hand needle into the two stitches on the right-hand needle, with the left-hand needle in back.
  5. Purl the 3 stitches together.
  • If the next stitch is a knit stitch:
  1. Bring the yarn to the back.
  2. Reverse YO.
  3. Slip the next stitch knitwise.
  4. Insert the left-hand needle into the 3 stitches on the right-hand needle, with the left-hand needle in front.
  5. Knit the 3 stitches together.

Repeat the above steps for any combination of knit and purl stitches.

What Do You Think?

Are you going to try this version of JSSBO on your next ribbed project? What’s YOUR favorite way of doing JSSBO? As Jeny says, “It makes me really happy when people come up with their own variations, because that’s what brings it to life.” Let Jeny and me know in the comments.

A Personal Update from Liat

Back in the Saddle with KnitFreedom

It’s been a long time! Thanks to Jeny getting in contact with me and sharing her new and improved techniques, I’ve dusted off the video camera and knitting needles once again. It’s been exciting for me to get this post ready for you, and I hope you love it.

Behind the Scenes at KnitFreedom

Our site has seen many setbacks over the last year, including some difficulties which almost finished us off. We lost most of our subscriptions in a hosting move a couple years ago, and had never really recovered (re-subscribe here if you’d like to get access to our library again!). Then, our shopping cart was broken for many months. Then spam traffic was crashing our site.

The good news is, Jeny Staiman’s idea to collaborate has breathed new life into my relationship with KnitFreedom. I’ve solved the most egregious problems on the site with the help of a new developer. We are now working on making the site faster so it can be more enjoyable to use. And lastly, this post is the first of three planned (and many more yet-to-be-planned) collaborations with Jeny to bring you my videos of her fabulous new techniques.

Liat’s Personal Journey

It’s been over a year since I posted here saying that family life had started to settle down. Milo is now almost 6 and Max is 2 1/2, and they are the boisterous, loving, challenging center of my life. In addition to helping my mom in her real estate business and studying for the real estate exam, I have also continued to learn and pursue knowledge in my favorite topics, among which are self-development, photography, and Feng Shui.

I officially became a certified Nine Steps to Feng Shui® consultant, which means I can now help people turn their current homes into dream homes, just by collaborating online (leave a comment below if you’re interested!). I also continue to improve the Feng Shui of the apartment I share with my mom.

Miracle Techniques for Parenting

One of the most momentous things I’ve learned this year is called the Nurtured Heart Approach. This is a parenting/teaching approach invented by Howard Glasser and explained in his book Transforming the Difficult Child.

There are a few key concepts to knock your socks off but one of the most smack-yourself-on-the-forehead, why-didn’t-I-see-this-before ideas is that we almost exclusively give our attention, energy, and focus to our kids when they’re misbehaving. As soon as they’re compliant, the attention goes onto other things.

Intense or needy kids learn pretty quickly that they can get a stronger connection to parents, caregivers, and teachers when they misbehave. It’s sort of an addiction. This is what I was going through with my oldest son. Even though I love him so much, his behavior was such that even the most patient mom would be at her wits’ end. All of my energy was going towards connecting with him during tantrums and other negative behavior.

Liat’s son Milo giving a big thumbs-up with a smile

It is a miracle I found the Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) through Milo’s after-school program. In it, Howard Glasser shows people how to invert this upside-down energy so that you’re giving praise, attention, encouragement, and connection to your kids when they’re NOT misbehaving, thereby creating a system that cultivates success and what Glasser calls “inner wealth.”

Here Come the Photos

And last, here is a collection of my favorite photos of my life (i.e. my kids) since I posted previously. Enjoy! (click a photo to open it full-size and read the caption)

  1. Penelope Young

So glad you are back and have survived and thrived during the past year. I love this web site and look forward to watching the new changes!

I was recivering from Cancer treatment this year and needed a small project. Socks have become my new knitting passion thanks to your clear toes up pattern and magic cast-on and two at a time directions. I even learned to knit continental though I have yet to use it on a project.

Yes I am categorically glad you are back……bring it on your fans are waiting!!!

    1. Penelope, oh my goodness — what an inspiring journey you’ve been on. I’m honored that my sock patterns were part of your recovery. You are amazing. I’m so glad you’re knitting again and exploring new styles. Your message touched my heart — thank you for being here and cheering me on! ❤️🧶

  2. Teresa Richardson

    Liat,
I was so excited I shouted out loud when I saw your email! I’m so happy you are back! I sing your praises every time someone in a waiting room asks me what I’m knitting. ❤️ You are an inspiration! And a model of resilience. Your positive words and supportive teaching are a wonder. ⭐️ So glad you’re back with new a technique!! Most of all, I’m glad you are doing so well!!

I’m not nearly good enough to invent my own stitch mods, so I’m very grateful you and Jeny got together to share the Turbo JSSBO. I’m a slow knitter, and even I have opted for a faster, less stretchy BO a time or 2 instead of using JSSBO. I can’t wait to start my next pair of toe-up sox or baby sweater to use it on. Looking forward to seeing what else you and Jeny have in store.

    1. Teresa, thank you so much — I’m blushing! Your support over the years means so much. I love that you share KnitFreedom in waiting rooms — that’s exactly the kind of energy that builds a beautiful knitting community. I’m so glad this new bind-off is helpful for you — it was designed for knitters exactly like you. More to come, promise! 💕🧶

  3. Oh my goodness! Seeing you in my inbox was such a great surprise! I’m so happy to see your update. You and your sons look terrific and I can’t believe how much they’ve grown. Lastly, thank you for sharing the new bind off technique. I’m still a novice and binding off socks has been, uh, eventful.

    1. Thank you, Stacie! Yes, the boys are growing like wildflowers. I totally get the ‘eventful’ sock bind-off… you’re not alone there. I hope this Turbo JSSBO helps make it smoother (and faster!).

I’m cheering you on from here — you’re doing great. 💛

  4. Sounds like you’ve been crazy-busy! I love seeing pictures of the boys! been too long!

Thanks for this new bind-off. I will have to try it.

    1. Linda, you’re right — it’s been a whirlwind, and it really has been too long. I’m so glad you enjoyed the photos — the boys are growing like weeds! I hope the new bind-off adds a little ease and joy to your next project. Let me know how it goes! 💕

  5. Thank you to both of you! Great technique and great instructional video. Love learning something new!

    1. Mallary, thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video — Jeny’s brilliance made it such a joy to share. I’m with you — learning something new is always the best part! 🧠🧶

  10. I was just thinking about you yesterday when I was relearning the Italian Tubular Cast On for 1×1 ribbing. I am so happy to see that you are doing well. You are so resilient!

    1. Taylor, what timing! Thank you for your kind words.

It means so much to hear that you were thinking of me — and I love that you’re digging into such a beautiful cast-on technique! Wishing you smooth stitches and continued resilience right back. 💕

  11. Glad to see you back and loved the pictures of you all. The boys are surely growing up quickly. My grandson,9, and my granddaughter,4, change in some way each time I see them. I enjoyed the JSSBO method and will try it on my next project.

    1. Joanne, thank you so much! Isn’t it wild how quickly kids grow and change? I feel the same way every week with mine. I’m thrilled you liked the JSSBO — I hope the Turbo version makes your next project even more joyful. Keep me posted! 🧶😊

  12. I AM SO DELIGHTED TO SEE YOUR NAME IN MY IN BOX!!! I’ve missed your inspiring messages and our occasional interactions. But I’ve kept, and frequently referred to your great video links in a special file. Congratulations on your return to the knitting internet. I think I’ve mentioned before how I shunned sock-knitting until your fabulous tutorials on the 2XToeUp method. Now, since I have two closets full of my own knitted sweater and topper designs, I’ve turned to doing more socks! Unfortunately, I had a fairly serious stroke a bit over a week ago and my vision is damaged. I can still knit, THANK GOD! Truly. But at this point the computer vision is a challenge. I’ll learn more about that in an upcoming ophthalmology appointment. I’m so happy to see you looking so glowing and well, and your precious boys with those big smiles. Best of luck to you and your association with Jenny!
    Happy regards,
    Norma Byrd

    1. Norma, your message means the world to me. I’ve missed you! I’m so sorry to hear about your stroke, and I’m so inspired by your determination to keep knitting — thank God indeed. I’m honored that you’ve kept my videos close all this time, and I’m celebrating your return to socks with you. Sending you healing thoughts and so much love. 💗🧦
By the way, since it’s been 2 months since I posted this and you commented – what news from the ophthalmologist?

  13. I knit the Norwegian method for both knit and purl but I should be able to work out how to do it – I hope!

    1. Tricia, you’ve got this! Norwegian knitters are some of the most precise and intuitive I know. If you run into any trouble adapting the JSSBO-Turbo, feel free to drop a comment and I’ll help you walk through it. Can’t wait to hear how it works for you! 🇳🇴🧶

    1. Welcome back Liat!! I have missed you in my inbox.

I am a little confused by your comment about lost subscriptions. I have a lifetime membership and can still log in and see classes. Is there something else I should be doing?

      Paula Caron

      1. Paula, I’m so glad to be back in your inbox — and thank you for being a Lifetime Member! You’re all set — that message was just for folks whose monthly memberships expired. I’m so glad you can still access everything. Thank you for checking and for being with me all these years! 🧡

  14. This is the BEST thing I’ve encountered since sliced bread!!! I’m using it to bind off my new “toe up, two-at-a-time socks. Bless you and Jeny!

  15. Diana Britton

Liat, wonderful pictures of you & your family. Moms are such a great help (most of the time) aren’t they? Thanks you for the updated JSSBO; I look forward to trying it soon. At the moment I am busy sort & packing up 30 years of living to move into an apartment on June 1. I know you’ve been through that experience plenty! I am eager to see what new things you offer us in the future. Have a great season!

    1. Diana, wow — 30 years of memories! Wishing you clarity, peace, and maybe a little time for knitting in the middle of all the packing. I’m so glad the video found you just in time. You’re right — moms are 99% the best and the 1% is to help me grow. Thank you for being here. ❤️

  16. Myrna Pouyatt

I was just thinking about you a couple of days ago. So glad to see this email, made me smile. I really have missed your post. So glad you are back. ❤️

  17. I’m excited to try this. I do use JSSBO but have to look up the instructions every time. Thanks Liat for giving us new and better ways to improve our knitting.

    1. Carol, that’s exactly why we made this shortcut version — I totally relate to having to look it up each time! I hope this one becomes second nature and saves you time. So glad it’s helpful! 😊

  18. Rebecca Swinney

I use the original JSSBO for rib all the time but it is slow. Now I’ll have to try this version. Thank you and I’m glad you’re back!

    1. It is so slow! I’m delighted it’s gone viral and has its own life in the wild but I seriously never use it. (BTW I would not be at all surprised if a clever knitter out there has already figured out this mod. But now you all have it too, thanks to Liat. 🥰)

    2. Rebecca, I hear you — the original is brilliant but not the fastest! I hope the Turbo version gives you that same beautiful finish with a little more speed. Let me know what you think when you try it! 💛

  19. Thank you and I will use this Bind Off especially for socks. I knit two at a time, toe up and magic loop. I missed you and learned two at a time fingerless mitts from your videos a very long time ago. Your instructions are the best.

    1. Flo, that makes me so happy to hear! You’re one of the knitters who helped shape what KnitFreedom has become. I love that you’re still doing toe-up two-at-a-time — and I hope this bind-off feels like a perfect next step. Thank you for sticking with me! 🧦🧡
