A dropped stitch on garter stitch is a pretty common mistake. To fix it requires that you combine your knowledge of how to fix both dropped knit and purl stitches. Here's how.

Dropped Stitch on Garter StitchA dropped stitch on garter stitch is a pretty common mistake.

To fix it requires that you combine your knowledge of how to fix both dropped knit and purl stitches.

I also have a sneaky shortcut for you for fixing the purl stitches.

The physicist Niels Bohr said, “An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field.”

So what are you waiting for? Let’s drop some stitches!

I encourage you to make a little garter-stitch swatch (just cast on 20 stitches and knit every row for ten rows).

Then, work along with me as I teach you how to fix dropped stitches when you are knitting in garter stitch:

  1. Oh my! I wish I had seen this video two months ago. 😪 I was knitting a garter stitch baby garment and found a dropped stitch 5 or 6 rows down and had NO idea how to correct it. I tried for half an hour and never got it right…so I frogged the whole thing. Sooo frustrating…all those hours of work down the drain. But that will never happen again, Liat. Thank you for giving me the tools I need to become a better knitter!!

  2. Thank you so much for your helpful hints and corrections! You make knitting fun. Your tutorials are so easy to follow. Thanks again for sharing your videos.

    1. Absolutely! I hace been carrying a crochet hook everywhere with my knitting in case I dropped a stitch. Now I won’t have to!!

  3. Thanks! You published so long ago, but its the gift that keeps on giving! Garter stitch is simple, but complicated, and completely popular again. Really didn’t want to rip back and was a minute away from it. Thanks so much!

    1. Suzanne, hooray! This was a technique that needed to be described with video, because you’re right – it’s simple but complicated too. Fixing dropped stitches on garter stitch will never go out of style :)

  4. How about how to fix a lost stitch that you just figured out it was lost like 2 rows later??! EEP

  5. Once again, I make a mistake and Liat helps me save my project :) I dropped a purl. First thing I thought was turn and fix a knit. But I was placing the working ladder in the wrong position for the purl to come out of the other side.

  6. This couldn’t be more timely for me! I’ve fallen in love with g.s. lately. But, every time I need to fix a stitch several rows back, my eyes cross trying to figure out the order up the ladders. Furthermore, I’ve been turning the work around, back & forth, with each row that needs to be fixed (no mean feat in a one-piece afghan). As usual, you’ve shown us a logical & clear approach. Thank you Liat!
