NEW! Fingering-Weight Toe-Up Socks With A Faux Heel Flap

Liat Gat - Founder

September 21, 2012

For toe-up sock lovers who want a great-fitting heel that can be adjusted for high insteps. This toe-up sock pattern has a "faux" heel flap which allows you to use heel stitch patterns like the Eye of the Partridge heel. You can also do a contrasting-color heel.

Fingering-weight faux heel flap socks in Western Sky knitsAhhh, the joy of a sock that fits just right.

The flow of a toe-up sock pattern.

The tiny, crisp stitches of fingering-weight yarn.

The fun of a textured heel.

The clarity of watching videos for every step.

The excitement of being part of a knitalong.

The satisfaction of finishing both socks at once.

How Much Knitting Bliss Can You Handle?

I invented this pattern specifically to answer to all the things that my readers said they wanted most in a toe-up sock pattern:

2) The ability to add a textured heel stitch like the Eye-of-the-Partridge heel stitch, and

  1. I was really, really happy to find this pattern – have been looking for something like this for a very long time. Tried it several times already and I love the possibility for making a heel in a contrasting colour – thats just perfect and gives an opportunity to play with colours. However, I had to tweak the heel a little when doing sizes with 64/32 stitches as the four first and last stitches on the needle will not be knitted together with the heel and therefore not in the CC. I just slipped the first four stitches before adding the CC for the heel, finished the heel and cut the yarn. Then slipped all stitches back on the left needle and then began knitting across in the main colour. Maybe you have a much better idea or maybe I do not explain this very well OR maybe I am just having a very senior moment :). No matter what – thank you so much for this pattern – it is my alltime favourite and I am overdoing my sock knitting – just for the fun of it. Elsebeth in Copenhagen

    1. Hi Elsebeth,
Thank you for your great comment and excellent question! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I’m SO glad you like this pattern. It checks all the boxes for me.
Thank you so much for your insight about when to start the contrasting color for the heel! You are absolutely right. I like your solution, or you could just knit the first 4 and then switch to CC. Does that make sense? I’ll have to knit these in contrasting colors for myself sometime soon, it’s been a long time!
      Cheers and keep in touch,
      Liat

  2. I have a question someone perusing these comments may be able to answer:
In Section 4: Turn Heel, it says “Row 2: P22, W&T.”
I assume the P22 correspond with the 22 st increase for the gusset. My question is then if I made an increase of 24 st for the gusset (or 26 st), should this then read “Row 2: P24 or P26, respectively, and then W&T.”
Maybe the answer will come to me when I simply try it out.

      1. Yeaaaaah!! Atta girl! That’s what I like to hear. You can follow any formula and modify any pattern once you have a strong understanding of the fundamentals. Keep up the good work!

  3. Best fitting heel ever, I tried oodles of different one over the years, and this one has the ease of a short-row heel and the fit of a flap with gusset heel, I am soooooo happy I found this pattern, no more “wandering heel” for me.

  4. I love your videos nice of you to explain the toe up 2socks on magic loop just 1 needle. I love knitting I want to start this project but I want you to show how to start and the heel turn and the gusset so please help. Thank you

  5. I finished my toe up-2AT-easy-peasy heel flaps, last night. I think I went a tad too small on the ribbing, but I can get into them…barely. I used Scholler-Esslinger Fortissima. I’ll post pix on Ravelry @bikrgran.

        1. Hi Linda, thank you so much for posting your pictures on Ravelry! Right now, there’s not a place on KNITFreedom to share pictures, but you can post them on our Facebook page.

  6. i cannot get the pattern, please help. i got the ‘knitting superstar’ and i get the emails you send out, but i cannot get signed in.

    thanks, susan

    1. Hi Susan, can you try again? We were having some trouble with the site that we just got resolved. It should work for you, but if not, please contact KNITFreedom support.

Thank you for this KAL. It is great to read how others are proceeding. I learned the magic loop a couple of weeks ago and can’t believe it is so easy. Now I am doing two at a time what a breeze “easy peasy” as they say. It is going so fast only half the turns and half the pulls. Not to mention the time saved relishing in that first beautiful sock and then realising you have to do it all over again to get the second sock.

  8. Liat, Thankyou for all your hard work. I have finished my 2nd pair of toe up socks and I think I have found my prefered method of knotting a sock with your patterns.

  9. Indeed I will be trying this pattern. I have not knit socks in ages and this looks like a great pattern. Thanks for doing this. Your instructions are always right on!!!

  10. i would like to try this KAL. I am not sure how to navagate Ravalry but hope to find this group. I printed the pattern and I have some fingering weight or sock yarn. I will do a guage swatch now and then try to find you.
    Thanks Liat.

  11. I’m in!
I always knit socks 2AAT but have preferred 2 circs to Magic Loop in the past. Will give this a whirl and see if I can change my own mind :)
Will sort thru piles of sock yarn stash to find something appropriate and then post pics asap.
    Thanks for the pattern, Liat!

    Thanks for the pattern, Liat!

  13. I am so happy for this pattern. I just finished the faux heel flap worsted weight socks. I actually made 2 successfully! Thanks to your great instruction and easy pattern directions. I am psyched to start these, yay.

  14. Yes, I was hoping to cast on for a pair of socks today so the message and pattern was very timely. I’ve watched/read several of the videos/posts and plan to view the rest. I noticed a comment about this pattern in worsted weight – where can I find this? I would very much also like to make toe up socks using DK and worsted weight yarn. I’ve not had any problem with the fit of prior socks but, am interested to try this one and am glad you developed it with a variety of sizes. I don’t have needles as long as indicated so, guess I’ll need to pick those up first.
Thank you for the pattern and all the info.

  15. Hi, Excited to try this technique. Is it at all possiable that you have this pattern in baby/children’s sizes? I am long OVERDUE making socks for my 14 month old grandson, thought this would be a great way to get them done, in the KAL on Ravelry!
If not, I will still participate. Thank you!

  16. I am so excited to learn all of these techniques! I have been wanting to do this for a while, but couldn’t put all the pieces together. This pattern and all of the tutorials seems like the perfect way to start. Thanks for sharing!

  17. I really want to do this so I can accomplish a good fitting sock…I’ve made a few that are not too swift. Just need to get the yarn and needle.

  18. I’ve started several socks left-handed, but I’m ready to follow a pattern AS WRITTEN for right handers! This should be a treat – no reversing or exchanging. I just hope my tension will be OK.

  19. Thanks so much for starting this KAL – this is exactly what I’ve been wanting to learn. I can’t wait to get started!

  20. Love this idea and I would very much like to join. :)
Jut finished my first pair of socks ever (worsted weight) – Liat you’re a bliss! :)
I’ve got yarn but will have to do the gauge test, do I’ll try to catch up with you guys as ap.

    @Elizabeth Mulhall
I’m from the Netherlands, so I hear you.
The yarn you’ll need is for 2,5 mm needles (perhaps 2 of 3 mm depending on how loosely you knit) There are special sock yarns too.
I don’t know if linking is allowed here, but I love the Drops-Fabel or Delight yarn from Garnstudio -Drops they have retailers in Ireland – hope you do see the link. http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/butikker.php?but=18

  21. Have never done socks nor a KAL. But I love your Knitting Superstar course, so I am looking forward to this. Just ordered 47 needles, but may have to start on my 40’s.

  22. Great timing for me! I’ve been wanting to learn how to knit socks from the toe up, and just found a bunch of sock yarn lurking on an out of the way shelf.

  23. I am so excited about this I hope I have the proper yarn for it. What I hve has no weight on it but it is very light weight. Will find out soon!

  24. I would have loved to knit this along with you and the group, however, just got home to your email at 11:20pm so I’m too late. With a couple of days notice I would have jumped at the chance for doing two at a time and a heel flap! Thank you soooo much for sharing. I’ll use this pattern for my next (3rd) pair of socks. I love ALL your videos and wouldn’t have been brave enough to try socks without you! Again, thank you so much.

    1. Annette there’s no deadline for being part of the knitalong! You just have to go to the knitalong and say hi and start your socks! I’ll be answering questions on the socks for the next two weeks, but there’s nothing wrong with taking as long as you want. I hope you join!

      1. I too read my e-mail too late. What is a knit along? How does it work? What do you mean to say “hi” on the Ravelry page? I searched on the Ravelry website for a good explanation and how it works for a knit along, but I did not find an answer. I would appreciate your assistance in case you do another knit along. Thank you.

    1. The moderators and I will be on there answering questions for the next two weeks, but I’m sure that the other group members will be continuing to post and answer questions for as long as people keep posting and asking them. That’s how it has worked in the past.

  25. I live in Dublin, Ireland and I have a question – is “fingering weight” the equivalent of our 4-ply yarn? I have googled this but have gotten more confused by the different interpretations listed. Can anyone help, please :-) Beth

    1. Elizabeth, I, too find this confusing. I checked my sources (a very thorough email from a KNITFreedom follower in England) and yes, “fingering weight” is usually 4-ply yarn. Just check your gauge to make sure you get 28 stitches in 10 cm. I think you probably will.

      1. Liat, thank you so much for your VERY fast reply!!! I have never worked socks toe-up (believe it or not never thought of going from that direction) so I am going to give it a whirl. They look absolutely cosy and comfortable in the picture. Not too sure about the Magic Loop but am sure that dpns would do just as well? Thanks for a great newsletter. Beth

  26. Ill be purchasing your video on knitting socks. Ive been dying to learn how to knit socks and reading a pattern just won’t do for this… I’m still a novice knitter. Can we do two at once so when we are done we are actually done?

    1. Yes, you bet! That’s one of my favorite things about Magic Loop and sock knitting. My two-at-a-time toe-up socks course teaches you how to get started two at a time, and the pattern also includes instructions for people knitting two-at-a-time, so that you don’t get confused. You are going to LOVE it. It’s like 5% harder than doing one at a time, and like 100% faster and more fun. :)

  27. I am so in for this! I have never knit two at a time. Is there something on your website that will teach me the cast on? Thank you so much I will wind my yarn tonight and get started in the morning.

  28. those looks so awesome – going to give it a try – can’t do as you go – but i will be keeping notes – thanks for creating a sock that looks like an awesome addition to my current socks…

  29. I’ve done toe-up socks, but haven’t tried two at a time, yet. This is perfect timing as I have some fingering sock weight yarn I’ve been dying to start working with. Thanks!

  30. Hi Liat. First of all, I so enjoy receiving your very informative e-mail newsletters and videos. I am interested in doing this KAL (I have never done one before). My only question is I have never used the magic loop method of knitting before. Is this a good project for my virginal experience with this method.

    1. Pat, this is a great project for learning Magic Loop. You will be challenged, for sure. I do think you should watch the introductory video that I link to in the pattern. I also HIGHLY recommend my short 12-video Magic Loop course before you start the socks – you’ll feel much more confident doing the socks. But whatever you choose, don’t let fear hold you back! I’m here for you. :)

      1. Thank you for your feedback and reference to recommended links and videos for this project. I’m sure “Liat” must mean “confidence” in some language as you sure have it and give it. I’m so looking forward to learning toe-up socks, two-at-a-time socks, and Magic Loop knot socks – even if it is all at once and I do lose some hair in the process!

  31. Just finished a pair of hand knit socks, would love to knit along. I have a high instep so am excited to try a new pattern. Thanks

  32. Thanks so much, I am joining the KAL on Raverly to complete. Looking forward to a toe up and interesting heel idea! Yarn is in hand and so is the inspiration!

  33. I have been waiting to try a sock pattern that is written for toe-up socks using the magic loop. I am looking forward to making them.

  34. I suppose it’s possible to do them on double-pointed needles, so that’s what I’ll do … eventually. We’ll be away – entirely off-line! – for the next three weeks.

    1. You’re welcome my dear! Sorry it took so long for me to publish this (can you believe I designed this pattern LAST YEAR? Aaaagh)… I’m glad it’s finally up, and I hope you love it! Hugs.

  35. Liat, Thanks for this pattern! I am looking forward to trying it! I am new to sock knitting and this will be the second pair so I’m hoping to stay with you all the way….

  36. This is the pattern I’ve been waiting for!! In fact, I have a pair of toe up, magic loop socks in sock yarn ready to start the heel! Perfect timing for me!

Thank you so much, Liat!! THANK YOU!
